Chile | Villarrica | Dec 8, 2003
The Expert Group on BAT/BEP began on December 8th and will continue through the 12th in Villarrica, Chile. The Expert Meeting will address the provisions of Article 5 and Annex C of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants on Best Available Techniques (BAT) & Best Environmental Performance (BEP), and make recommendations to the Stockholm Convention First Meeting of the Conference of the Parties.
IPEN promotes alternative techniques in the BAT/BEP Expert Group Meeting discussions. The IPEN Northern Chair coordinated the development of a thought starter paper 'Considering Alternatives' for the Expert Group’s Second Session (complete document link below). IPEN is confident the Expert Group discussions will explore alternative techniques rather then narrowing the discussions to strictly technology and incineration efficiency, especially as these techniques contribute to the release of POPs known as U-POPs (Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants).
