On 15-16 February 2003, a Workshop on discussion of the results of the preliminary inventory and monitoring of POPs in Armenia in the framework of the project "Enabling activities to facilitate early action on the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on POPs" was held in one of the most beautiful sites of Armenia - Tsakhkadzor.
The Workshop was organized by the Armenian Ministry of Nature Protection and UNIDO with financial assistance of GEF.
Among the participants of the Workshop were interested Ministries, authorities, and departments, as well as the leaders and members of working groups and task force, including NGOs. The NGO sArmenian Women for Health and Healthy Environmentt as a Focal point of IPEN in the country and a member of the working group on pesticide inventory was also invited to participate in the workshop.
The reports of each working group on the course of inventory of sources of POPs, along with the results of the monitoring were presented at the workshop.
They confirmed the presence of residual amounts of persistent organic pesticides and their metabolites (DDT, DDE, DDD, Lindan, HCCH & PCBs) in various objects of the environment and biota, as well as in samples of human breast milk.
The participants were informed about the large amounts (tens of thousands tones) of PCBs containing oils in condensers, transformers, and other equipment, still used in the country.
The participants discussed also the problems arisen in the course of Implementation of Enabling Activities, as well as the ways of their overcoming.
