The Sydney Tar Ponds contain approximately 700,000 tonnes of sediments contaminated with polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), including an estimated 50,000 tonnes of material containing PCBs in concentrations over 50 parts per million (ppm). The site was contaminated by wastes from old coke ovens.
