By Farida Khanam, Bangladesh

Almost 77% of the total populations of Bangladesh are exposed by lead; which has contaminated by lead containing paints. A study report discloses this information. According to the report all decorative paints uses in Bangladesh are lead contained. Environment and Social Development Organization-ESDO has conducted this study and ware launched study finding on “Lead in Paint in Bangladesh”. The launching ceremony was held on March 21, 2010, at 3:00 pm to 5:00 p.m at Reporters Unity Conference hall, Dhaka. Research team leader Dr. Hossain Shahriar presented the findings. ESDO Chairperson Syed Marghub Murshed was session chair. ESDO Executive Director Siddika Sultana, Professor Dr. Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Department of Public Administration, Dhaka University take part in the discussion.

Lead is a dangerous substance especially for children. Decorative paints are main source of lead, these paints mainly used in a wide variety of products including ceramics, pipes, solders, gasoline, batteries, cosmetics, building construction etc. Lead-based paint is the most common cause of poisoning was eating leaded paint chips. In fact, the most common pathway of childhood lead exposure is through ingestion of lead dust through normal hand-to-mouth contact during which children swallow lead dust dislodged from deteriorated paint or leaded dust generated during remodeling or painting. Lead is more dangerous to children because their bodies can suffer from Headaches, Irritability, Abdominal pain, Vomiting, Anemia, Weight loss, Poor attention span, Noticeable learning difficulty, Slowed speech development, Hyperactivity, Slowed growth, Degeneration of tissues in the central nervous system, Damage to the circulatory system, reproductive system and gastro-intestinal system etc.

Three categories paints are available in the market- Brand, Non brand and Local. We are collect 29 samples in the market. According to BCSIR examination report, 22 samples are carries lead with their permissible limit. According to WHO and U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R) permissible limit of lead in paint is less than 600ppm (<0.06%).

Main purpose of this research is to increase awareness about the harmful effect of lead use in decorative paints, especially raising awareness of toxicity to human health and the environment and alternatives, prevention programmes to reduce lead exposure and promotion of national regulatory frameworks.
