Central and West Africa Workshop on the Development of National and Regional Regulations and Standards on Lead in Paints

IPEN, in coordination with the Centre de Recherche et d’Education pour le Développement (CREPD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Government of the Republic of Cameroon, hosted a Central and West Africa Workshop on the Development of National and Regional Regulations and Standards on Lead in Paints in Yaoundé, Cameroon. The Workshop, held at the Cameroonian National Assembly by kind invitation of the Government of Cameroon, featured presentations by the Cameroonian Ministries of Environment, Health and Industry; CREPD; the U.S. EPA and IPEN, amongst others. Presentations and discussions related to the importance of global lead paint elimination; overall progress to eliminate lead paint; an overview of the Global Alliance to Eliminate Lead Paint; the Lead Paint Alliance Toolkit for establishing laws to control the use of lead paint; and updates about standards in Kenya and Ethiopia. Technical sessions related to conducting paint studies, producing data, and alternatives to lead in paint also transpired. Government and NGO representatives from 13 countries participated in the Workshop.

The Workshop was conducted under IPEN's project to eliminate lead from paint in four African countries (Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia and Tanzania) and concluded on 9 December, 2016.

A member of the Cameroonian Parliament reviews IPEN's booklet "Eliminate Lead Paint: Protect Children's Health" while attending the Workshop.
