Until 2021, about 77% of decorative paints manufactured and sold in Indonesia contained high lead concentrations above the global achievable safe level of 90 ppm. Lead is a toxic heavy metal and is classified as a probable human carcinogen.
This study was conducted in Indonesia from 2022 to 2023 and aimed to assess the health risks faced by paint manufacturers' workers in three factories grouped as follows:

From May to July 2023, the Philippines IPEN member EcoWaste Coalition purchased a total of 46 cans of paints intended for decorative and industrial applications from stores in 10 cities and one municipality. The group also purchased some paints from online sellers. The paints represented 27 different brands produced by 22 manufacturers. All paints were analyzed by an accredited laboratory for their lead content.

25 August 2023, Quezon City. The toxics watchdog group EcoWaste Coalition deplored the unrelenting sale of imported spray paints banned by the authorities in 2020 for containing lead, a hazardous chemical not allowed in the manufacture of paints and similar surface coatings.
This paper is intended as a guidance and reference document for those engaged in promoting a Rotterdam Convention decision to list lead chromates in its Annex III.
IPEN is campaigning to promote a decision by the Rotterdam Convention to list lead chromates in its Annex III and make them subject to the Convention’s Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure.
